As part of theMiss Teen Canada- World Pageant, each delegate is required to raise a minimum of $400 for The Free the Children Foundation. Free the Children Foundation is a charity and youth movement founded in 1995 by Craig Kielburger. The organization is largely youth-funded, based on the concept of “children helping children.” The Foundation’s main goal is to:
“ free children from poverty and exploitation and free young people from the notion that they are powerless to affect positive change in the world. Through domestic empowerment programs and leadership training, Free The Children inspires young people to develop as socially conscious global citizens and become agents of change for their peers around the world.”
Last week I was given the priveledge of hosting a Bake Sale at Hawthorne Senior Care Community where I have been volunteering weekly for almost a year now. With residents and staff that always have a smile on their face, Hawthorne is a welcoming and loving community.
In preparation for the bake sale, I would like to thank Vicki Robertson, the volunteer co-ordinator at Hawthorne, who helped to organize and advertise the event. Without her help the event couldn’t have happened. Credit must also be given to Karissa Lodewyke, Gabriella Santarossa and my grandma Kate who all helped bake for this event! Finally, I must thank all of those generous donors at Hawthorne who helped contribute to my efforts for this worthy cause.
I am so happy to have had the opportunity to share my experience as Miss Teen Coquitlam within not only an important place in my community but also with place that is so close to my heart.
